Subject: Call To Action: Chandler PD, Chandler Fire, and Safe and Secure, Inc. Begin Distracted Driving Campaign
Chandler, AZ- The Chandler Police Department, Chandler Fire Department, Safe and Secure, Inc., and Ocotillo Friends, will launch a Distracted Driving Campaign to the Chandler community at large.
The first free public event will be held
Friday, November 18, 2016 from 5-7 p.m.
3050 S. Dobson Road, Chandler, AZ 85248.
The campaign is in response to an increase in traffic collisions due to distracted driving.
According to ADOT 2015 crash reports 48% of the drivers involved in a collision where distracted by an activity with an electronic device (ADOT, 2015).
Cellphone use laws have been enacted in serval cities with the desire to reduce traffic collisions as a result of drivers being distracted by cellphone use. The resulting research has shown a very small decrease in collisions involving distraction. (Journalist Resource, 2014).
The Carnegie Mellon group also did research into this concern and found that without consistent directed enforcement drivers will continue to operate vehicles while using cellphones (Carnegie Mellon University Research Group, 200870-80). The group also found that the highest distraction to a driver is speaking while driving.
Representatives from Chandler PD, Chandler Fire, Ocotillo Friends, and Safe and Secure, Inc., an Arizona 501(c)(3) will be on hand to answer questions from the public.
Attendees will be provided a W82TXT thumb band or bracelet, a pledge to commit to not text and drive, and a website link to valuable resources including PSA’s from Chandler PD.
Safe and Secure, Inc. and Ocotillo Friends alongside of law enforcement mobilizes citizens to help reduce risk taking driving and internet behaviors by providing digital citizenship trainings, community leadership, preventative education, and strategic collaboration.
